Senior Wellness Testing enables us to detect the early signs of kidney, liver, and other diseases in older pets, allowing us to extend a higher quality of life for your pet.
Starting August 2006 Chaska Valley Veterinary Clinic kicked off three new exciting special procedures to
better identify and characterize disease in our patients. With higher level tools and expertise we provide quicker, less invasive and accurate results in cases of dental disease, heart disease, digestive disease and other conditions affecting the chest and abdominal cavities. Doctors and staff at Chaska Valley attend countless hours of continuing education courses and wet labs routinely to become proficient in these upper level diagnostics.
Digital Dental Radiography
For the last 10 years, Chaska Valley has offered dental prophylaxis to our patients with dental disease. Teeth, gingiva (gums) and the oral cavity are critically evaluated under general anesthesia. Ultrasonic scaling and polishing of the tooth surface and pockets (space between the tooth and unattached gingiva) are performed and sometimes therapeutic dental extractions are necessary. Dental x-rays allow the clinician to make informed decisions about teeth and bones. Some teeth that look healthy on the surface are actually irreversibly diseased below the gum line. Some teeth with mild injuries on the surface may at first be considered candidates for extraction, but with x-rays we might find that the deeper structures are very healthy and retaining that tooth is recommended. Digitalizing the image allows us to perform retake views rapidly shortening anesthesia time, and allows the doctor to share results with clients and educate them on proper dental hygiene in the home environment.
Consol and Doxirobe
Besides dental radiography, Chaska Valley offers upper level treatment during dental prophylaxis. Some extraction sites involving large or markedly diseased teeth heal faster and more effectively with implantation of Consol. Consol is a surgical grade powder that acts as a synthetic bone graft serving as a matrix for jaw bone healing after oral surgery. For deep pockets around otherwise healthy teeth a special formula of the antibiotic Doxycycline is injected into the recess. This allows for local ‘wound’ management, killing bacteria right at the site where they are causing gingival destruction threatening the health of the tooth and its related structures.
Abdominal and Thoracic Ultrasound
Sonograms (ultrasound) are diagnostic procedures that allow imaging of structures below the surface of the skin much like x-rays. Sound waves are emitted through a hand held transmitter into a patient’s body from the skin surface. Most often this technique does not require any sedation. Sound waves are either absorbed or bounce off internal organs at varying frequencies depending on their density and water content. Sound waves return back to the transmitter and are assimilated with a computer producing an image on a monitor. The image is interpreted by the clinician in real time and can be immediately evaluated. Many different orientations of the same structure can be performed gaining sensitive information that can lead to a diagnosis and subsequent treatment. We can use this technique to obtain fluid and tissue samples of diseased organs and body cavities. Now available to help our patients through more advanced diagnostics, the ultrasound is used to evaluate liver, pancreas, stomach, bowel, kidney, spleen, lymph node, adrenal, lung, heart and cancerous disease.
Endoscopy
Fiberoptics are used in your phone line, but are also used to transmit light and images to and from deep structures inside the body. The image is captured by video and is reviewed by the doctor on a monitor in real time. We advance fiberoptic endoscopic equipment through natural openings in the body like the mouth. We can critically evaluate and take biopsy samples from the inside of the throat, stomach, small intestine and colon. Foreign objects ingested by overzealous scroungers can be successfully removed from the patient’s stomach passing grasping instruments through channels inside the scope. General anesthesia is required but since the patient experiences so little discomfort and doesn’t receive a surgical approach, the depth of the sedation required is less than for conventional surgical exploratory procedures. Patients recover quickly and experience less post procedure pain. Endoscopy is used to diagnose a variety of stomach, bowel, colon, bronchial, laryngeal and nasal cavity diseases. At this time, Chaska Valley now offers endoscopy for improving the quality of care for our patients.
